Tarig Kandaig: Prosecuting international crimes under Sudanese Law

In this video interview recorded in March 2023 (before the outbreak of the armed conflict in Sudan on 15 April 2023), Tarig Kandaik, independent Sudanese lawyer and member of the Emergency Lawyers, talks about accountability for international crimes in Sudanese courts. He shares his experience as a lawyer who represented the family of a victim who was killed by a security agent during pro-democracy protests calling for the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir’s regime in December 2018. Mr. Kandaik talks about his experience supporting the public prosecution in the case – Prosecutor v Ashraf Abd Almutalib also known as Ashraf El Tayyib (Abu Jiqa case) in which the accused was charged with murder as well as crimes against humanity – the first case of its kind in Sudan:
