On 14 September 2022, Mohamed Chande Othman, former Chairperson of the Africa Group for Justice and Accountability, addressed the Wayamo Foundation-Contraband cultural event in Khartoum, entitled “Kul Al Balad Darfur – exploring complementary avenues for justice and accountability” via video message. In his remarks, Othman talked about justice, accountability, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, including respect for the rule of law. He stressed the importance of the participation and inclusion of civil society organisations, women and minorities in the development of strong institutions and democracy in Sudan.
He emphasised that constitutionalism and the rule of law will allow Sudan to build a sustainable and durable peace. He added that survivors and their demands for justice should not be forgotten, before concluding that “Accountability cannot be sidelined. Measures to redress crimes committed in the past, and committed with impunity, should be at the forefront in devising mechanisms for transitional justice to address past atrocities, and pave the way for a durable and inclusive Sudan for all”.
